What is writing for SEO? Is SEO content writing one of the skills you acquire through conscientious studies or do you just pick up a list of SEO writing tips from one of the search engine optimisation gurus?
When you search for a reliable guide to writing content that contributes to your website’s SEO health you will find that there are many schools of how to do it. But if you really look to the established sources of SEO knowledge, for example, MOZ or Brian Dean’s blog, you will see that there is not one single rule that you slap on to create content that satisfies readers online. Good news though: while there is no recipe for how to write, the method of arriving at your own SEO secret sauce recipe can be replicated.
How to Write for SEO
To find your own successful process of writing content that is visible on search engines, follow these steps:
Step 1: Know who your audience is, what they want, how they want it and when they want it.
Step 2: Monitor trends and statistics, and deliver content that is both timely, relevant AND responds to your audience’s needs. What are your audience’s needs? Go back to step one.
Step 3: Make sure you serve the written content in a format that makes consuming it easier.
Step 4: Get feedback on your published content and …improve it. Don’t let it go stale.
In addition, “writing for SEO” means writing content that is aligned with:
- Current business goals and/or short-term objectives, for example, event sales campaigns.
- Writing, which is aligned with the overall website’s SEO profile and the brand’s target audience. For example, a list of book recommendations for entrepreneurs published on a website catering to startups will be different than a list of book recommendations published on a beauty website.
- Championing the good SEO practices – formatting, keyword placement, ALT image text and so on.
- Finally, whenever possible, also taking care of the distribution of the article with a dedicated organic social media campaign and outreach. Referrals and link placements in as many external locations as possible are really helpful, especially for new websites.
